XI International Festival of Contemporary Music
MOSCOW FORUM
marking the 15th anniversary of the Studio for New Music ensemble
Theme of the XI festival: ORCHESTRA REHEARSAL
The theme and, in part, the very form of the festival dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Studio for New Music are borrowed from Federico Fellini’s famous film ORCHESTRA REHEARSAL. The issues raised by the film — the eternal contradictions between the individual aspirations of the person/soloist, the collective attitudes of society/the orchestra and the dictates of the leader/conductor — are highly relevant to Russian society today as well. In our small ensemble, on our own level, we are working out our own model of how they might be resolved. For all of us, that model is precisely the soloists ensemble — an instrumental formation that took shape in 20th-century European music, in which each voice is individual, endowed with its own timbre and possessed of considerable independence. In addition, in the course of our Orchestra Rehearsal the ensemble’s leading soloists will be given the opportunity for an extended individual statement “in the first person” — they will give solo recitals. These personal creative portraits will be “balanced” by the participation of the same musicians in the ensemble’s collective performances.
A real sensation will be the first Russian performances of Nikolai Obukhov’s “Ecstasy” and Vsevolod Zaderatsky’s Symphony — works that have waited more than half a century for their Russian premieres! The festival will also present a whole series of works by contemporary Russian composers written specially for the Studio for New Music. Young Russian composers are also widely represented in the programmes.
This year’s festival guest will be — paradoxical as it may sound — the “oldest” contemporary music ensemble, die reihe (Austria), which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The ensemble will present premieres by contemporary Austrian composers. The visit of die reihe is supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow.
The festival is held with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Austrian Cultural Forum, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Muziek Centrum Nederland (MCN)
