The programme is timed to coincide with the exhibition “After Impressionism”.
The first score customarily regarded as Impressionist – Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune – appeared almost a decade after the eighth and last Impressionist exhibition. Our programme features works written later still – in the 1910s, but before neoclassicism emerged at the instigation of Igor Stravinsky and Alfredo Casella, and before Arnold Schoenberg formulated the chief discovery of his life, dodecaphony. The works in the programme – Maurice Ravel’s Trio, the miniatures of Schoenberg and his pupil Alban Berg, and Nikolai Roslavets’s Trio – are, as it were, squeezed between these two titanic massifs.
Moreover, researchers have recently been asking whether Impressionism in music ever existed at all. We shall try to answer that question too. The concert will be presented by Fyodor Sofronov.
