A concert of the philharmonic subscription series “Aesthetics and Palette of Styles in the Music of the 20th and 21st Centuries”. In the concerts of the series the Studio for New Music ensemble will introduce listeners to phenomena of musical language that are not obvious at first glance but essential: time, space, number and gesture. In themselves these concepts may seem speculative and inaccessible to sensory perception, yet music is able to turn abstractions into sensations: after all, our memory speaks to us in the language of sounds, appealing to our emotions.
In four programmes the Studio for New Music will present the most diverse trends and techniques of the 20th and 21st centuries, including spectralism, saturalism, minimalism, stochastic music, dodecaphony, sonorism, instrumental theatre and jazz. The first concert is devoted to experiments with rhythm and with the listener’s perception of time: from the meditative quality of Messiaen and Feldman to Brubeck’s famous Take Five. Author and host of the programmes: musicologist, composer, teacher and senior researcher at the Centre for Contemporary Music of the Moscow Conservatory Fyodor Sofronov.
