The event is part of the public programme accompanying the exhibition “Love in the Avant-Garde. Mikhail Matyushin and Elena Guro”.
The evening brings together works by Mikhail Matyushin set to texts from all three books by his wife, Elena Guro. The first of them, “Music for Harlequin (Canzone)”, was Matyushin’s debut as a composer, and the last, the music from the stage production “The Little Camels of the Sky”, is one of his latest works. The concert thus becomes a journey through the work of two of the most important figures of the Russian avant-garde.
At the centre of the programme is the score of the musical spectacle “Autumn Dream” (1921), reconstructed by the exhibition’s curator, Sergey Uvarov, in which Matyushin himself combined his music of different years, creating an innovative polystylistic collage. This work was previously thought to be lost. However, specially for the exhibition it was restored from the author’s manuscripts that had been discovered, in collaboration with the Studio for New Music, and it will be performed at this concert for the first time.
